District Cabinet Meeting - March 12, 2010

The meeting held in conjunction with the District Convention at the Dubuque Holiday Inn was called to order at 5:30 p.m. by DG Rick Daluge. 1st VDG Gene Francis led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. PDG Reverend Frye followed by leading the group in song and finished with the invocation. Dinner was served.

After dinner, DG Daluge introduced PID Harold Ott and his wife Barbara, from Pennsylvania. Harold Ott made brief comments about the need to change some of our old habits as a club and an organization to attract the new members that will be our future.

The minutes of the January 24th Cabinet Meeting were approved upon motion by PDG Walt Althaus and second by PDG Arlen Milestone.

Cabinet Treasurer, Lion Al Schultz, presented the Treasurer's Report, showing a 2/28/10 balance in the Activities Fund of $56,358.05 and a 3/7/10 balance of $45,962.23 in the Administrative Fund. It was noted that the Administrative Fund is overstated by about $10,000 since we have much of the District Convention revenue deposited but none of the expenses paid. Upon motion by Lion Scott Grover and second by 2nd VDG Neil Winchell, the Treasurer's Report was approved.

Rick Daluge announced that while all clubs in the district are bonded for this year, expect possible changes next year based on negotiations at the state level for a bonding company willing to carry all clubs in the state.

Neil Winchell reported on activities in the district related to Extension. Efforts in 3 communities (Friesland, Rio, and Blanchardville) to organize a club continue. New Leo clubs appear likely. Efforts continue on a campus club at Platteville. Extension training and Guiding Lion training will be combined with a canvassing effort in Madison on March 15th-17th.

Lion Rob Sherman reported that Officer Training sessions are scheduled at Waunakee (4/19), Belmont (4/21) and Albany (4/22). One topic at these sessions will be a discussion of Wisconsin Lions Foundation Associates in our clubs. These club designees will be the liaison between WLF and the club.

Lion Jodi Burmester reported on PR activities within the district including LCI sponsored activities, activities related to the LCIF matching grant that our district received, and extra financial contributions by the Madison clubs. The Madison clubs are sponsoring a Volunteer Expo at the Edgewater on March 23rd to help in the recruitment efforts. Jodi offered help to any club looking to enhance their PR efforts.

PDG Jerry Sherwin thanked Rick Daluge for his efforts distributing 2009 district pins. Sales this year have been very good. Two hundred of the 2010 pins arrived a few weeks ago and are available for sale. Two of the best pin traders are at the convention.

Regarding the State Convention, DG Rick reported that the state winner in the Global Youth Music Competition is from the Lancaster area and will perform at the State Convention. PID Phil Ingwell reported that there will be three resolutions at the convention. A constitution and a bylaw change would encourage clubs and districts to bid on the State convention and provide resources to assist the State Convention Coordinating Committee in running the convention. The final resolution would approve a roof replacement project at the camp that exceeds the $100,000, thus requiring delegate approval. Lion Bill Tefft expressed his frustration with the State Convention Coordinating Committee. DG Rick finished this discussion with a reminder that there is no Saturday night banquet this year.

Lion Sam Powell reported on behalf of the Wisconsin Lions Foundation. He announced that the office of WLF will be moved to the Lions Camp site at Rosholt.

Lion Erling Isley reported on the 4th Mission to Mexico trip this year and the significant good that comes out of each mission. About 10-11,000 glasses were fitted this year as a result of these trips. A school bus that we provided will be converted to a mobile eye clinic.

IPDG John Jensen reported that the District Convention has over 300 registrants; there will be no raffle because of Iowa gaming laws but donations will be solicited. Donations will be used to build our District Emerrgency Fund and help Haiti Relief (50/50 basis).

Upon a motion by Neil Winchell and second by Lion Bob Faliveno the Cabinet approved an expenditure of $150 from Special Committees of the Administrative Fund to defray some of the expenses of the state winner of the Global Youth Music Competition, from Lancaster, to perform at the State Convention.

Upon motion by Lion Ed O'Brien and second by Lion Scott Grover, the meeting adjourned at 7:15 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Al Schultz
District Secretary/Treasurer
