District Cabinet Meeting - Legion Hall, Cross Plains - January 22, 2012

The meeting was called to order by District Governor Lion Neil Winchell at 12:00 p.m. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by 1st VDG Lion Daryl Porter followed by song /prayer by PDG Lion Rick Daluge. Dinner was served by Cross Plains Lions. DG Lion Neil thanked them for the great meal.

The minutes of the cabinet meeting held at Brodhead on 10-16-11 were approved by a motion made by Lion Bill Tefft, 2nd by IPDG Lion Gene Francis after PID Lion Phil Ingwell said that he did not report on the International Convention in Korea. The treasurer's report was approved by a motion made by VDG Lion Robert Faliveno, 2nd by PID Lion Phil Ingwell.

CEP update and PR: Lion Jodi Burmester reported on getting CEP started with meetings in Feb., at the convention and at officer training. It is a process the club takes to plan strategies to solve problems. She will help clubs with their PR as needed.

DG report: Lion Neil reported that the district is down by 64 lions. The new club at UW-Platteville has its charter. Leo Clubs will be formed in Hazel Green and Belmont. Increase the number of women by 21.

First VDG report: Lion Daryl Porter reported that he is working on a new Clinton club, completing his cabinet, setting up meetings in Beloit, Waunakee, and Dodgeville, and having 3 lions on extension.

Second VDG report and Adult Vision Screening: Lion Robert Faliveno reported on his district training, helping develop CEP, inducting new members and conducting /demonstrating adult vision screenings.

Eye Bank and District Convention—PDG Rick Daluge said that a record number of corneas were taken and the open house included Potosi and Iowa-Grant Leos. The deadline to register for the convention is Feb. 20. Prices are down on the meals and PID Joe Al Picone from Texas will be our guest. Promote attendance and get information in to Lion Mike Tiber for the necrology service. Clubs are asked to take out ads in the convention booklet and get articles into the newspaper.

Diabetes—Lion Dale Boness reported they are working on juvenile diabetes with the American Diabetes Association especially in promoting the diabetes camp at the Lions Camp. A new DVD is to be presented at the district convention and orders will be taken; thanks to Lions Greg Johll and Ray Ropers.

Care/LCIF—Lion Doc Esser reported that $12,000 was donated to Dr. Gil for his work in the Philippines. We have 7 Melvin Jones using matching funds. DG Neil presented Lion "Doc" with a certificate from LCI.

Candidate Search/Review Committee and Convention Planning—PDG Lion John Jenson reported that the candidates to be put on the ballot are Lion Daryl Porter for DG; Lion Robert Faliveno for 1st VDG and Lion Randy Harrison for 2nd VDG. He said that the International Convention is in Korea on June 22-26; the State Convention is in Green Bay on May 17-19 and next year it will be in Madison at the Mariott.

Hearing—Lion Dan Wilkinson reported that 5 people got hearing aids with help from the district and that he has drop boxes for hearing aids. Next year drop boxes will be used for glasses and hearing aids.

Youth Exchange—Lion Ben August reported that 4 have applied to go overseas. Three received scholarships of $1000 each and one did not qualify (but financial aid will be provided from other sources.) They are seeking 5 families to host students and a stipend of $150 is available. A camp is provided for the visiting students and volunteers are needed to provide a picnic after their tour of Madison. The district pins are being packaged for the students to present to lions clubs overseas.

Mission to Mexico and WLF—Lion Sam Powell reported that school desks have been sent to Texas and that Lions will go to Honduras, but no trips to Mexico. The Lions license plate is still in the works with reduced start -up costs. Our Lions Camp is hiring staff and repairs are underway. Donations are down.

Peace Poster—DG Lion Neil gave checks for the 3 contest winners, which will be given to them by their home clubs. Get started for next year, materials are available from International and Lion Rob Perkins.

Lions Affiliate, US/Canada Forum, Women in Lions—Lion Greg Clark reported that at the Lioness District meeting Colleen McCormick is running for Affiliate Dist. Pres., Marcia Seybold is running for Secretary and no one has filed to run for Affiliate Vice-Dist. Pres. The US/Canada Forum is in Tampa Bay on Sept. 13-15. Statistics on women in lions: Lions International - 23% women, our district - 18% women.

Constitution and Research--The3min/ 2min/2min rule for nominating, seconding, and accepting speeches by candidates will be voted on at the district convention. The possibility of not having the honors night banquet is to be researched, it seems that many officers leave after the voting is done.

Alert/Disaster Relief—Lion Bill Tefft said that clubs should contact him if they need help.

Pins—PDG Lion Jerry Sherwin reported that an idea has been presented for a new pin series; looking for more. An order has been sent in for 150 district pins and surplus pins have been given to Leo Clubs.

Parliamentarian/ Protocol—PID Lion Phil Ingwell said that the meeting has gone well. The state convention has no resolutions to vote on. International has a program for measles shots for children.

Retention—Lion Tara Vraniak said that the district has a great video to orientate new members to lions.

Membership—Lion Randy Harrison reported on the CEP project to help clubs with membership.

IT—Lion Scott Grover urged committees to send in reports so he can post them on the web site.

Leader Dog—Lion Gene Francis reported that the next trip to the Leader Dog School will be in August and Lion Phil Ingwell reported that dogs are being trained to help the deaf and this included using GPS.

Leo Clubs—Lion Bucky Boland reported that the advisor for the new Leo clubs at Southwestern and Belmont will be former Leos. Get more Leos coming to the district convention by waiving their fee.

Tail Twister—Lion Dennis Gullickson handed out the 50/50 prizes. There will be 2 at the convention.

Other business: Lion Neil reported that a former AARP employee wants to give free classes in defensive driving. He should join a lions club to get access to clubs. Lion Neil adjourned the meeting at 2:30 p.m.
