Diabetes Committee Report

There is both a minimal amount to report from the committee and at the same time a ton of progress made by the MH/District Diabetes Prevention Program pending service project, which I will be presenting at the meeting “in person”.

COVID and technology continue to be an issue for us as a committee, however we all agree about the need to continue to encourage service projects related to Diabetes, especially in preparation for Diabetes Alert Day on November 14, 2020. An order form went out from WI Lion's Foundation to receive a new diabetes book for local clubs to donate to libraries. I would love to know how many clubs took advantage of this or plan to. I did see that Mazomanie Lions made a donation, as I saw it in the newspaper. Keep up the good work, Mazo! Way to represent. Don't hesitate to reach out at your zone meetings and encourage your diabetes committee representatives to let me know what your service projects are. You may recall we won the WI contest for diabetes related service projects, and I miss hearing about your great ideas.

Now an update on the Diabetes Prevention Program long-term service project. Classes will begin mid-November (in honor of World Diabetes Day), with the first 20 attendees paid for thanks to the amazing generosity of WI Lions. Although COVID has really thrown a loop in so many things, it has been a blessing in disguise for this project. Resources available to DPP program administrators and lifestyle coaches have allowed for a revamp using technology to make the program safer in a world of germs and limits on the number of people who can gather.

The program consists of 16 wkly 1 hour meetings (limited space in person, or via Zoom) in the first 6 months. The final 6 months will consist of 1-2 sessions/month. The premise and success of the program in one of the largest studies is attributed to food logging and being active.

Trollway Diabetes Care, LLC is in the process of becoming a non-profit organization as well thanks to the UW Madison Law and Entrepreneur Clinic. Although I do not know exactly how long this will take I do plan to report back about the ongoing status. If anyone would be interested in being on the TDC Board of Directors please reach out to me.

The additional costs involved in transitioning this to a mostly virtual program, supplies, etc, is approx $850 (presentation at meeting for use of Diabetes Committee funds). I cannot wait to be able to start reporting some success stories and data as the program starts. Just look at some of the data from the original study:
    • Average weight loss 14.5 lb
    • 49% of subjects reached or surpassed 7% weight loss.
    • Average weekly physical activity: 224 minutes
    • 74% of subjects reached or surpassed 150 minutes/wk of exercise!

I am anticipating the meetings will be held hopefully on either Mon or Wed evenings from 6:30-7:30. I haven't decided yet on the exact day of the week.

If you have been diagnosed previously with prediabetes, please take the referral form (available on my website) to your doctor and fill out the contact form on my website, trollwaydiabetescare.com.
