27-D1 District Cabinet Meeting - January 12, 2025 - Zoom

Cabinet Meeting Minutes

1. Call to order at 11:00am by District Governor Ron Wright, thanked everyone for taking the time to be in attendance, 24 Lions present at beginning of meeting.

2. Pledge of Allegiance lead by 1st Vice District Governor Jim Klubertanz.

3. Words of Wisdom presented by 2nd Vice District Governor Tony Sobczak.

4. Secretary's report included minutes from October 6, 2024 - presented by IPDG Jeff Winkler in Steve Pogue's absence. Motion by PDG Bob Faliveno, seconded by PCC Tammy Rockenbach to approve minutes, motion carried.

5. Treasurer's report - Lion Bill Severson reviewed current financial statements that had been sent prior to meeting, motion to accept report by 1st VDG Jim Klubertanz, seconded by PID Peter Cerniglia, motion carried.

6. District Convention update provided by IPDG Jeff Winkler. Convention committee to meet on Tuesday, January 14th at 5:30 via Zoom Virtual Meeting. Online registration is scheduled to be available by Friday, January 17th. Motion by PCC Tammy Rockenbach, seconded by 2VDG Tony Sobczak for the District to provide $2,000 towards the purchase of service project supplies to be used at the convention, motion carried. Convention is March 28-29, 2025 at Marriott Convention, Middleton, WI.

7. State Convention update provided by DG Ron Wright. Convention registration is available online, Kentucky Derby theme, LaCrosse, WI, May 1-3, 2025.

8. Youth Exchange Trailer - Lion Crystal Riniker had previously informed the District about a replacement storage trailer for Youth Exchange. Motion by IPDG Jeff Winkler, seconded by PDG Al Johnson to donate $1,500 towards the cost of the trailer, motion carried.

9. WI Lions Summit - February 14-16, 2025 - Marshfield WI. PCC Tammy Rockenbach explained the agenda will include topics surrounding member recruitment, member retention, member orientation and will also include Guiding Lion certification on Sunday, 2/16/2025. Motion by PDG Bob Faliveno to provide $100 to support travel and lodging expenses for participants, 2nd by PDG John Evelkrog, motion carried.

10. District Day of Service - Saturday, April 26, 2025 - new flyer has been prepared along with associated materials for promoting on social media.

11. Committee Reports
a. Global Action Team (GAT) -
i. Global Leadership Team (GLT) - Region meetings were held in October 2024. Guiding Lion certification will be scheduled later in the year. Officer training will be scheduled for May/June 2025.

ii. Global Service Team (GST) - Lion of the Year and Service Project of the year are due by 2/15/2025. Reminder to encourage clubs to report service activities.

iii. Global Membership Team (GMT) - Current D1 membership down by 29 members compared to last year. Reminder for all of us to make sure that our members are being asked to participate and be active in our club activities. Member involvement is directly tied to retention. A new Environmental Club is in the early stages, a Facebook page has been created, “Madison Area Environmental Lions Club” - please follow this page to stay up to date with current announcements. PDG Bob Faliveno also reported on the potential “restart” of the UW Lions Club. Bob has been assigned the checking accounts for the club and will be leading the efforts to attend a volunteer fair at UW.

b. Lions Eye Bank of Wisconsin (LEBW) - Lion Erica shared a few comments regarding her unique experience of riding on the Lions International float in the Rose Parade on January 1, 2025. See the video here, Erica is sitting next to the service dog, go to 5:15 of the recording to see the Lions float: watch-first-6-minutes-of-the-136th-tournament-of-roses-parade. 53% of listed tissue transporters have been certified. Transporter lists need to be updated to determine the actual number of transporters that still need to get certified by June 30, 2025.

c. Restoring Hope Transplant House - PDG Al Johnson reported that 10 Lions from our District participated in a clean-up day in the fall of 2024. The house is investigating outside cleaning agencies to provide “whole house” cleaning so Cindy, Eric and Nancy can concentrate on serving their guests.

d. USA/Canada Forum - 1st VDG Jim Klubertanz reported that the Forum is in Atlantic City, NJ on September 18-20, 2025. Early registration rate is $300/person and includes 4 meals, all of the seminars, and keynote speaker sessions.

e. Children Vision Screening - Lion Milo explained the need for the vision screening tent to be set up at the District Convention so everyone can see the way it controls the light in the exam area. Reported that we have screened approx. 9,000 kids.

f. Adult Vision Screening - PDG Bob Faliveno summarized the 4 screening events in 2024 and will continue to respond to opportunities for 2025.

g. District Convention - discussed in item #6 above.

h. Peace Poster - DG Ron reported that we had 11 entries this year, the poster from McFarland won the District contest and also won the State contest and has been sent to Lions International for the final contest.

i. Youth Exchange - covered in item #8 above.

j. Wisconsin Lions Foundation (WLF) - Lion Jim Fletcher explained most recent updates at the Wisconsin Lions Camp to include a new storage building for the eyeglass recycling center, sending broken eyeglasses to recycling center in California which eliminates them going to the landfill, deer hide project is complete for this year, visitor days are open for scheduling and clubs should highlight this opportunity(especially for new Lions so they can see the scope of that project in person).

k. Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) - no report

l. Diabetes - Lion Jill has sent awareness email to presidents and secretaries to hear about their diabetes projects. She is looking for clubs to pass along any diabetes projects that they are involved with. Motion by PDG Bob Faliveno, seconded by PCC Tammy Rockenbach to use $350 from the Diabetes account to offer a scholarship to an interested person that does not have health insurance, motion carried.

m. Leader Dog - no report

n. Childhood Cancer - Lion Julie mentioned that there is no state-wide project, but clubs can still participate with local childhood cancer needs and also can support 1 of the 5 cancer support groups that were included in the 2024 cause.

o. Birch-Strum - Lion Greg Clark reported that their fund has been doing well during the past 2 years, the interest income from their funds is used to support the Wisconsin Lions Camp. Lion Greg will be doing an educational email explaining the differences between the 3 fellowships that are available: Melvin Jones, Birch-Sturm, Ray Hempel.

p. Leo Clubs - Lion Brenda Steele reported that attendance at the District Convention by Leos will be difficult since it is scheduled at the same time as several school districts have their spring break. Waunakee Leos are disbanded, DeForest Leos are not active, Cassville and Potosi are trying to start Leos, maybe an opportunity to combine efforts? Marshall Leos provided a holiday dinner that was attended by 150 people - 3X the attendance from the previous year.

q. Environment - no report, Lion Leah has been preparing articles for the Lion newspaper.

r. Wisconsin Lions Missions - IPDG Jeff Winkler provided a current summary of mission trips during 2024 - Dominican Republic in February served 3,000 people, Guatemala in May completed cataract surgeries, Pine River, SD in October served 862 vision screens and also provided a truckload of donations to Families Working Together, Guatemala in November served 1,800 vision screens in cooperation with Minnesota Lions Missions, Hurricane Helene recovery efforts in December in Tennessee and North Carolina resulted in approximately $130,000 in donations with an additional $40,000 to be distributed in the near future.
