Cabinet Meeting Minutes

Call to Order at 12:37 pm by DG Conrad Dreyer

Pledge led by 1st VDG Tammy Rockenbach

Words of Wisdom from Fred Rogers, given by 2nd VDG Bill Clausius.

“All of us at sometime or another need help. Whether were giving our or receiving help, each one of us has something valuable to bring to this world. That's one of the things that connects us as neighbors and in our own way, each one of us is a giver and receiver.”

“I hope you're proud of yourselves for the times you said YES. When it all meant was extra work for you, and was seemingly helpful only to someone else.”

“ We live in a world in which we need to share responsibilities. It's easy to say it's not my child, not my community, not my world, or not my problem. Then there are those who see the need and respond. I consider those people my heroes.”

DCC Missy Dickson was recognized for her dedication with a “New Voices Award” from the Wisconsin State Lions in the category of marketing.

DG Conrad Updates - One of the things that's usually out by now is a directory for the district. LCI does not know if they are going to publish it this year because of privacy concerns. The legal division of LCI is reviewing to see if it can be published or it may be a matter that they must receive permission from all to publish their info.

As of today, we've brought in 46 new members into our District through September, but we've lost 61. We need to stay connected with our members to retain them. Please keep all of our members involved.

Secretary Report - DG Conrad reported the minutes are on the District website. There were no additions or corrections. Motion to approve the August 4th meeting minutes was made by PDG Bob Faliveno, 2nd by GLT Mike Keller, motion carries unanimously.

Treasurer Report - CT Bill Severson stated that he paid State dues and bonding. He also moved the money from Administrative account to Activities account listed under 27 D-1 raffles. We are showing a negative $4300 so far and large part because we didn't collect the first half dues as it was decided at the last Cabinet meeting. All and all we are still in decent financial shape.

PID Phil Ingwell recommended that we form a committee to give recommendations to the Cabinet for where we could spend the money in the new 27 D-1 raffles account established from Conventions.

CT Bill also put the $20,000 from Administrative account into the two CD's as instructed at the last Cabinet meeting. We've made $12 in interest from these CD's, which already surpassed last years total interest earnings.

Motion to accept the Treasurers report by PID Phil Ingwell, 2nd by PID Pete Cerniglia, motion passes unanimously.

Campaign 100 - As of last year, our District has donated $94,000 to LCIF for Campaign 100. This year so far our District has given approximately $5000. We need to move our promotion towards individual donations by members versus Club donations. We again need to stress that 100% of funds donated go to needed relief all over the world, versus only a percentage like United Way and other foundations.

Presentation

*Childhood Cancer Initiative - Lion Sri - stated that in 2018 with the matching funds grant from LCIF and the donations from clubs in the state, they were able to purchase a Flow Cytometer for the Medical College of Wisconsin/ Childhood Hospital of Wisconsin. Because this was a new technology in treating Cancer patients and not officially approved yet, it first had to be tested on adults. Out of the 20 patients that had only one week to live and all other options exhausted, 13 are in complete remission. Out of the 11 patents that received the strongest dosage, all 11 are in complete remission. They are currently in the process of getting it approved for children.

In 2019 with the excess of $78,000 funds raised from the matching funds grant, Lion Sri was able to partner with the (MACC fund) headed by Jon McGlocklin and donate a 2 nd Flow Cytometer to the University of Wisconsin Carbon Cancer Center in Madison. Because of the change in protocol, it will be able to be used on Children patients immediately.

Moving forward into 2020, it will be setting a precedence across the country as they will see the results of the success stories in Wisconsin and he feels it will become a normal treatment used for many Cancer patients. Thank you to all who helped with the process of getting the Flow Cytometers purchased! Lion Sri would like to continue to be the Childhood Cancer chair and he will be writing another grant once LCIF approves him to proceed.

Standing Committees

Global Membership Team - Lion Tara Vraniak - Retention is a key focus with the District this year. Concentrate on keeping newer members involved and sponsors should be reaching out to them if they haven't been at a meeting in a while. Also remind your Secretaries to report membership each month. This is done in the old LCI, so please remind them to take the time.

Global Leadership Team - Lion Mike Keller - Regional meetings are coming up this next week. Included will be “My Lion” training so please encourage your Secretaries to attend along with other Club officers. Please RSVP so we can plan on how much food to purchase at each meeting.

Global Service Team - Lion Bruce Voight - Service reporting is down. We are reporting at 66%, compared to the 30% state average. Again encourage your Secretaries to attend one of the Regional meetings for the “My Lions” training. Bruce feels reporting will improve after these meetings.

Wisconsin Lions Foundation - Lion Steve Ver Kuilen - Director Laurie sent in the report and it's posted on the District website. Two highlights from the directors meeting was the election of new board President Wayne Heiman and he presented a check for $35,600 to WLF. Last year we had 1196 campers attend. We donated 107,000 pairs of eyeglass to 88 different missions.

The Lions Pride Sporting Clays fundraiser is scheduled for June 13th, 2020. The Birch Sturm event will take place on July 18 th . August 15 th will be the Hustle S'more event. Just a reminder that their fiscal year starts again January 1st, not July 1 st so send in your donations.

Restoring Hope Transplant House - PDG Bob Faliveno - Stated that recently a unanimous decision by the Council of Governors approved “Restoring Hope Transplant House” as an official program for the State of Wisconsin.

He mentioned Lion Cindy accepted into the house a family that was victims of the Caroline Fire. Two members of the family have passed, but she is still caring for the remaining family members. Both he and Lion Cindy will be attending District Conventions to promote the house throughout the state.

They are looking to break ground on an expansion project sometime in the summer of 2020. This will result in them turning away fewer families that need our help in the future. Motion PID Peter Cerniglia, 2nd PDG Eric Holthaus. By unanimous vote from the cabinet of district 27-D1 on October 13, 2019, permission was granted to use the remaining $59,000 of the original $75,000 grant issued for the expansion of Restoring Hope Transplant House. Ground breaking will commence in the summer of 2020.

One of the biggest challenges will be finding a place to house the patients during expansion. PDG Bob also stated he has been in contact with Channel 47 news to do an in studio report on the expansion project as well as a remote report while the expansion is taking place. This should help to bring awareness of the good “Restoring Hope House” provides.

Committees

Lion Missions - Lions Erling & Ann Isely - Just got back from an Eye Mission to Wanblee, South Dakota on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. He thanked everyone that donated clothing, boots, beds, & furniture as they served 1200 people. Lion Erling said they go through Deforest Lions Bob and Mary Epps who live out there and put up a 60x90 warehouse (A goodwill station). There is a lot of poverty on the reservation as 60% sleep on the floor. Life expectancy of a male is 48, while females reach 52. 50% of the Adults have diabetes. Kids go to bed hungry every night. Every Friday Bob and Mary's team feed 180 kids with meals.

This year they have the Lions District Governor of South Dakota onboard willing to work with them. Wisconsin Lions are going to work with the South Dakota Lions to bring relief to this area. Why can't we make a difference in this city in middle of the United States? Lion Erling and Ann are convinced that we can help these people live better lives and are passionate to achieve this. Contact Erling if anyone knows of a trucking company willing to donate a semi and driver to haul things out to the warehouse for just the price of fuel.

Lions Youth Exchange - Director Lion Ben August - We are currently looking for applicants to attend any one of 100 international youth camps. Applicants need to be 16-20 years old and must have a sponsoring Lions Club. They are fundraising right now for their program as they expect to send 6-7 kids and they give them each scholarships. The deadline is December 15 th to donate. Lion Ben has applications or they can be found online. Reach out to him to inquire.

Youth Vision Screening - Lion Milo Parker - Lion Scott Grover has the new reporting form on the District website. Milo mentioned he talked to PlusOptics to try and reduce the price of the extended warranty of $295 per year. If we can get 40 cameras in the state, he may get the price reduced from the $295 to $100 per unit. He will send out survey to all Clubs in the district that he will need back by December 1st. Only the S12 models are available for reduced extended warranty.

Adult Vision Screening - PDG Bob Faliveno - He's looking for more volunteers for Adult Vision Screening especially in the Southwest and Northeast corner of the District. He has (2) Humphrey devices used for adults that he received from Prevent Blindness free of charge that he wants to put to good use. Please contact him if you can help. They are participating in the “Latino Health Fair” up on the square in Madison this Saturday. They usually screen about 100-120 and usually half gets referred. They've begun to bring reader glasses with them to the screenings because many times that's all the people need help with is seeing the finer print.

Diabetes - Lion Jill is trying to advocate to get rid of the step program, which requires Doctors to make steps with medications when they really know what a patient needs from the start. She's been to Washington and also visited Senators Pocan and Johnson to try to influence their decision. She should be commended for her involvement.

Lion Missy participated in the JDRF ride. They raised a lot of money for Diabetes. Wisconsin Lion District Editor - Lion Mike Vraniak - Continue to send pictures and write-ups that can go on the 27 D-1 page of the Wisconsin Lion.

2020 District Convention - DCC Missy Dickson - They had a meeting last Friday. Event will be at the Chula Vista in Wisconsin Dells. It's March 14th and 15th . Convention Experience will be $90, registration and lunch only is $60, and registration only is $30. Lion John Dickson will handle the memorial service for the convention that PDG Dick normally took care of. He will be reaching out to each club to get info for the Lions we've lost this year.

General Information Surveys - 1st VDG - Tammy Rockenbach - Surveys will be going out next week and also present at the regional meetings. Please encourage your members to fill them out, as we want to know what everyone would like to see at the District Convention.
